Reception
Welcome to Reception!
Welcome to Reception! We’re excited for a fantastic year of learning.
Our Reception team is made up of Mrs Millar, Mrs Hanna, Miss Carr, Miss Yeo and Miss Barfoot and we will be teaching and supporting your children throughout the year.
This Term's Learning
This term, our Reception learners will be starting off by focusing on the character strength of bravery. Through the story ‘I Can Catch A Monster’ children will learn to face fears with confidence and curiosity. They will practise identifying emotions, building self-confidence and developing problem-solving skills. The story also supports resilience and a growth mindset, showing children that courage means trying even when something feels scary.
To bring their learning to life, pupils will be participating in some exciting drama workshops, providing them with the opportunity to develop communication and language skills by expressing ideas through talk, movement and role play. We will also be exploring our local area and using simple maps. The children will build observational language and early geographical skills as they explore familiar places and learn how maps represent real environments.
Last Term's Learning
Reception pupils have had a fantastic start to the school year, enjoying a wide range of exciting and engaging learning experiences across the curriculum.
In Language, Literacy and Communication, children have been developing their phonic recognition through the Monster Phonics programme, which supports early reading and writing. They are learning to select appropriate reading materials independently and apply their growing phonics knowledge when writing for a range of purposes, including lists, cards and labels.
In Mathematics and Numeracy lessons children have been developing number recognition and counting skills, building a secure understanding of numbers. They have explored money through practical activities, learned to identify 2D shapes and ordered objects by size. Children are also beginning to use simple addition, applying their mathematical thinking in everyday contexts.
For Science and Technology we have been exploring the topic of space, learning about the sun, moon, stars, and planets through stories, discussion and hands-on activities. In Expressive Arts, pupils have explored collage, mark making and developed scissor skills through a range of creative activities. They have also enjoyed playing simple percussion instruments and responding to rhythm through movement and sound. For Humanities, the children have been learning about recycling and how we can look after our environment. They have also explored the seasons, noticing changes in weather, nature and daily life throughout the year.
In Health and Wellbeing, children have been developing confidence, independence and emotional awareness through circle time, mindfulness and daily routines. During PE sessions, they have built physical skills such as balance and coordination through SKIP while also learning about staying active and healthy.
Overall, it has been a lovely term and the children have made fantastic progress across all areas of their learning.
