Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!

Welcome to Year 2,

Our Year 2 team is made up of:

Class teachers: Mrs Stallwood and Mrs McKeown.

Teaching assistants: Miss Morgan, Miss Aspland and Mrs Thorne.

We are so proud to be part of such an exciting and important stage in your child’s learning journey. Year 2 is a year full of growth, curiosity, and confidence-building, where children are encouraged to become more independent learners while still feeling supported and valued. We aim to create a happy, nurturing classroom where every child feels safe, challenged, and inspired to do their very best each day.

This Term's Learning

This term, Year 2 will be enjoying a busy and exciting programme of learning. In Mathematics, we will be exploring 2D and 3D shapes, developing our understanding of data handling through pictograms, and continuing to build confidence with multiplication, division and fractions. In P.E., children are developing their skills in tennis, and we are all looking forward to taking part in Sports Day. We will also be getting out and about in the local community and are excited for our summer trip. As COOL Learners (Controlling Our Own Learning), the children will be choosing our class book focus for the term, meaning much of our learning will be inspired by their interests and ideas. In Expressive Arts, we will continue to explore a range of different media in both art and music, encouraging creativity and self-expression throughout the term.

Last Term's Learning

Year 2 travelled back in time to find out what it was like to live as a Roman. They began their new Science topic exploring plants, learning about life processes, diet and growth, and what living things needed to survive. In P.E., children developed coordination and teamwork through SKIP and Net and Wall games. Personal, Social and Emotional learning was supported through a focus on Children’s Mental Health Week and developing healthy screen time habits. Strong communication skills were built through oracy lessons, with a focus on both listening and speaking skills. Reading sessions developed positive reading behaviours and vocabulary acquisition, while writing was taught through a structured writing journey across a range of genres, supported by grammar, punctuation and spelling tasks. Handwriting and word processing skills were also developed. Welsh patterns were further practised during Drillo, and learning was enriched through songs, rhymes, poems, stories, multimedia and drama to inspire creativity and confidence. In Mathematics and Numeracy, they built on skills learnt last term while also developing time, measurement and data handling. In Expressive Arts, children experimented with a range of different media.
