Year 3
Welcome to Year 3!
Welcome to Year 3! We’re excited for a fantastic year of learning.
Our Year 3 team is made up of Mrs Hellier, Mrs Lake, Miss Cotter, Mr Nicholas, Mr Phelps and Mr Giannini, and we will be teaching and supporting your children throughout the year.
This Term's Learning
This term, our Year 3 learners will be exploring an exciting new topic inspired by Toy Story! Children will be learning about toys from the past and present, comparing old and new toys, and even designing their own. We’ll also be exploring elements of storytelling, characters and music from the films to bring the topic to life in a fun and engaging way.
In Science, we will be starting a new topic all about the life cycle of plants. Pupils will learn how plants grow, what they need to survive and will observe changes over time.
In P.E., we will be focusing on developing our teamwork skills through a range of team games, as well as building our confidence in athletics and practising cricket skills.
Last Term's Learning
This year, our Year 3 pupils have enjoyed a wide range of exciting and engaging learning experiences across the curriculum, building on a fantastic start in the autumn term and continuing into a busy and enriching spring term.
During the autumn term, children made a fantastic start to the school year. In Language, Literacy and Communication, they developed their reading and writing skills through storytelling, comprehension activities, poetry, and letter writing. A strong focus on spelling, handwriting, and prediction skills helped pupils grow in confidence and express their ideas clearly.
In Mathematics and Numeracy, lessons were hands-on and meaningful, with children exploring place value, reasoning, ordering numbers, and interpreting bar charts. Real-life financial literacy activities helped pupils understand wants, needs, and money in everyday contexts.
In Science and Technology, pupils learned all about space, exploring the planets, their order, and a range of interesting facts. In digital learning, they developed independence by logging into laptops and using key features in Hwb.
In Expressive Arts, children created self-portraits, explored warm and cool colours, studied the work of Alma Thomas, and enjoyed music appreciation sessions. In Humanities, they developed their thinking through discussions around fairness, beliefs, and learning about Christianity.
Supporting children’s health and wellbeing was a key focus, with circle time, emotional regulation activities, sleep discussions, and pupil voice opportunities helping to build confidence and positive relationships. Weekly P.E. sessions developed teamwork and coordination through gymnastics and SKIP activities, alongside regular library visits and whole-school events.
During the spring term, pupils continued their learning with an exciting Humanities topic on the Romans. They explored life in the Roman Empire, including daily life, Roman homes, and the impact the Romans have had on Britain. Pupils designed and created their own Roman villas and took part in engaging Roman workshops to bring their learning to life. They also visited Swansea Museum, where they had the opportunity to deepen their understanding through real-life experiences.
Alongside this, pupils developed their digital skills through a focus on digital media, where they planned and created their own podcasts 🎙️. This helped to build confidence in speaking, listening, and presenting, as well as encouraging creativity.
