Year 6
Welcome to Year 6!
Welcome to Year 6! We’re excited for a fantastic year of learning.
Our Year6 team is made up of Mr Farrant, Mrs Summers, Miss Parker and Mrs Hill and we will be teaching and supporting your children throughout the year.
This Term's Learning
This term, our Year 6 learners will be focusing on Humanities, where they will travel back in time to learn all about the British Empire. Children will explore what life was like in the past when the British Empire expanded, influential people who led the change and some of the impacts that challenged life including The Plague.
We will also be developing our understanding of Plants this term, looking in more detail at the process of photosynthesis, what plants need for survival and how plants create their own energy.
Last Term's Learning
This term, our Year 6 pupils have had a fantastic start to the school year, enjoying a wide range of exciting and engaging learning experiences across the curriculum.
In Language, Literacy and Communication, children have developed their reading and writing skills through story, comprehension activities, poetry, and instructional writing. A strong focus on reading skills has helped pupils grow in confidence and express their ideas clearly.
Mathematics and numeracy lessons have been hands-on and meaningful, with children exploring place value, reasoning, ordering numbers, and more recently, fractions and percentages. Real-life learning was brought into the classroom through financial literacy activities, helping pupils understand wants, needs, and money in everyday contexts.
In Science and Technology, we have been learning about space. The children have learnt about the planets, their order, and learnt interesting facts. We have also developed our understanding of asteroids by completing a science investigation on the size of different craters. The children have even designed, made and evaluated their own bottle rockets! In digital learning, we have been learning to create databases as well as coding lessons on Scratch and Micro;Bits.
In Expressive Arts, pupils have experienced a range of opportunities including chalk/pastel art linked to Space and also digital art. We also watched a fantastic theatre show called The Eye Of The Storm which allowed us to celebrate acting and music together.
In Humanities, children developed their critical thinking skills through discussions on the origin of the World comparing theories between the Creation Story and the Big Bang Theory.
Supporting children’s health and wellbeing has been central to our learning. Through circle time, emotional regulation sessions, sleep routine discussions, and pupil voice activities, children have been encouraged to share their thoughts, celebrate achievements, and build positive relationships.
Weekly PE sessions have helped pupils stay active and develop teamwork and coordination through basketball and more recently, swimming sessions for Mr. Farrant’s class. Mrs. Summer’s class will have swimming later in the year. Regular assemblies, celebrations, and enrichment activities have added to an enjoyable and well-rounded term.
