Expressive Arts

The study of Expressive Arts at St Thomas helps children explore their creativity, imagination, and self-expression. Pupils experience art, music, drama, and dance, learning how to communicate ideas, emotions, and stories in different ways.

Through Expressive Arts, children develop important skills such as creativity, collaboration, confidence, and problem-solving. They also learn to appreciate their own work and the work of others, helping them become expressive, thoughtful, and culturally aware individuals.

Our Expressive Arts Curriculum

Our Expressive Arts curriculum is all about helping children to have fun, be creative and build confidence as they grow. In Progression Step 1, learning is very hands-on and playful. Children explore art, music, dance, drama, and digital media through stories, songs, role play, movement, and messy making. As they move into Progression Step 2, they start trying out new materials, instruments and ideas. Children learn how to practise, perform and talk about their work, often linking it to books and topics they’re enjoying in class. By Progression Step 3, children are more independent and adventurous, developing their own style, learning new techniques and using technology to create and reflect on their work. Throughout all stages, our curriculum encourages creativity, collaboration and enjoyment, helping children express themselves confidently while developing important artistic and communication skills.
