Reception
Welcome to Reception!
Welcome to Reception! We’re excited for a fantastic year of learning.
Our Reception team is made up of Mrs Millar, Mrs Hanna, Miss Carr, Miss Yeo and Miss Barfoot and we will be teaching and supporting your children throughout the year.
This Term's Learning
This term, our Reception learners will be developing their sense of curiosity as they investigate new ideas and engage in imaginative learning experiences. Through our pirate theme, children will be encouraged to explore, ask thoughtful questions and use problem-solving skills as they navigate playful challenges and adventures. Our work on healthy eating will support pupils in understanding how different foods help our bodies to grow and stay well, with opportunities to sort, taste and discuss a variety of ingredients. Alongside this, the children will be learning about plants, observing how they grow and developing early scientific knowledge by caring for seeds and exploring the natural world. These learning experiences will strengthen communication and language, build confidence and nurture positive attitudes towards discovery and wellbeing.
Last Term's Learning
It has been a fun and busy term, filled with exciting experiences and new learning for the children.
In Language, Literacy and Communication, children have been strengthening their early reading skills by developing confidence in blending sounds to read simple words. Through daily phonics sessions, they are applying their growing phonic knowledge with increasing accuracy and independence. Alongside this, pupils are working on forming letters correctly and practising handwriting skills to support more fluent and independent writing. They are beginning to use these skills when writing for a range of purposes, demonstrating greater control and confidence in their written work.
In Mathematics and Numeracy, the children have been exploring 3D shapes by handling and naming objects like cubes, spheres and cylinders. They’ve also been practising simple subtraction using practical resources to help them work out “take away” problems. Alongside this, the children have been learning about money by recognising coins and using them in play activities, helping them understand how we use money in real life.
For Science and Technology we have been exploring coding using Beebots and carried out a STEM project to make a balloon car. In Expressive Arts, pupils have created bold Welsh-themed artwork inspired by Rhiannon Roberts,
enjoyed taking part in simple dragon dance movements for Lunar New Year and responded to Welsh language music with percussion instruments as part of our St David’s Day celebrations. For Humanities, the children have been learning about Easter and why it is special to many people. They have also explored springtime animals, noticing how they grow and change, and have talked about special places in their own lives and within the community.
In Health and Wellbeing, children have been building confidence and independence through outdoor learning, taking part in activities that encouraged teamwork, resilience and a connection with nature. As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, they also enjoyed a calming spa-themed day, exploring relaxation, self-care and wellbeing through gentle sensory experiences.
Together, these experiences have supported the children’s overall wellbeing and helped them feel calm, confident and connected.
