Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Welcome to Year 1! We’re excited for a fantastic year of learning.

Our Year 1 team is made up of Mrs Hole, Mrs Farrant, Miss Coe, Miss Goulding, Mrs Davies, Miss Brickwood, Miss Otteson, Mr Nicholas, and we will be teaching and supporting your children throughout the year.

This Term's Learning

This term, our Year 1 children will be enjoying a lively and engaging curriculum full of creativity, outdoor learning and practical experiences. Building on inspiration from our visit to Llanrhidian Primary School’s Y Goedwig, we will be further developing our own garden area to enhance outdoor learning, giving children opportunities to explore, collaborate and learn in a natural environment.

Our class topic this term is The Scarecrows’ Wedding, which will spark the children’s imaginations and creativity. They will design and build their own scarecrows and plan a wedding celebration, using this exciting theme to develop key literacy skills. Children will be writing lists and invitations and using descriptive Welsh words to enrich their language learning.

In numeracy, the children will be developing their understanding of number by counting in sets of 2 and 10. They will also explore money by adding coins together and using them to pay for items, helping them apply their mathematical skills in real-life contexts.

As part of our learning about the natural world, we will be taking part in the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch. The children will observe birds in our local environment, record the data they collect and learn the names of common local birds, developing their observation and data-handling skills.

We are looking forward to an exciting and enriching term of learning for our Year 1 children.

Last Term's Learning

Last term, our Year 1 pupils made a fantastic start to the school year, enjoying a wide range of exciting and engaging learning experiences across the curriculum.

In Language, Literacy and Communication, children developed their reading, oracy and writing skills through poetry, letter writing, prediction activities and retelling stories. A strong focus on handwriting and prediction skills helped pupils grow in confidence and express their ideas clearly.

Mathematics and Numeracy lessons were hands-on and meaningful. Pupils explored measuring using non-standard units, counting forwards and backwards, understanding one more and one less, and developing their addition and subtraction skills. Children also worked hard on number recognition and correct number formation.

In Science and Technology, the children enjoyed learning about space, discovering the planets and exploring interesting facts. A visit from the space dome provided a fantastic and immersive learning experience. In technology, pupils developed their digital skills by saving their work, typing their names, and creating different pieces of work using JIT.

In Expressive Arts, pupils created self-portraits and explored a range of art techniques using paint and chalk. In Humanities, children developed their critical thinking skills through discussions about fairness and beliefs, as well as learning about Christianity.

Supporting children’s Health and Wellbeing has been central to our learning. Through circle time, pupils were encouraged to share their thoughts, celebrate achievements, and build positive relationships. We have also been focusing on becoming COOL learners by managing our environment and participating positively in weekly activities.

Weekly PE sessions helped pupils stay active while developing teamwork and coordination through gymnastics and SKIP activities. Regular library visits, assemblies, celebrations and enrichment activities all contributed to a fun, balanced and successful.
