Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

Welcome to Year 5! We’re excited for a great year of learning.

Our Year 5 team consists of Miss James and Miss Harris, the Year 5 class teachers. We are supported by our fantastic teaching assistants, Mrs Galvin and Mrs Alban.

Together, we work closely as a team to support and challenge pupils as they grow in confidence, independence, and their love of learning.

This Term's Learning

This term, our Year 5 learners will be focusing on Humanities, where they will travel back in time to learn all about the British Empire. Children will explore what life was like in the past when the British Empire expanded. We will learn about influential people who led some of the changes, and the impact this had on people who lived during these times.

We will also be developing our understanding of Plants this term, looking in more detail at the process of photosynthesis, what plants need for survival and how plants create their own energy.

Last Term's Learning

Year 5 had a busy and exciting term full of hands‑on learning. In Language, Literacy and Communication, children developed their reading and writing skills through stories, comprehension activities, poetry and story writing. A strong focus on reading skills has helped pupils grow in confidence and express their ideas clearly.

In Welsh, pupils learnt to express their likes and dislikes and explored clothing vocabulary. They also developed their understanding of third person vocabulary.

Mathematics and Numeracy lessons have been hands-on and meaningful, with children exploring place value, reasoning, ordering numbers, and more recently, formal addition and subtraction methods. We have also placed a strong emphasis on children developing their recall of multiplication tables.

In Science and Technology, pupils explored Space, they enjoyed the Space Dome experience in school and visited the Oriel Science Museum in Swansea to link science with creativity. The children also took on a STEM Marble Maze Challenge, developing teamwork and problem‑solving as they designed and tested their own mazes.

In Humanities, we enjoyed finding out about The Gunpowder Plot and Guy Fawkes. We also visited Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, who are celebrating their 200-year anniversary. We enjoyed an interactive history of Swansea through the years.

Our Health and Wellbeing work focused on character strengths, emotional regulation, healthy sleep routines and building positive relationships. In PE, pupils developed their ball skills and took part in small‑sided volleyball games.

In Expressive Arts we created artwork inspired by our class text ‘The Barnabus Project’. We also explored different materials to create eye-catching pumpkins. As part of our music curriculum, we have started learning the ukelele.

Pupils have developed their Digital Competence Skills across the curriculum. They took part in an AI live lesson, created planet databases and developed presentation skills using Teams and PowerPoint.
