Mathematics and Numeracy

The study of Mathematics and Numeracy at St Thomas helps children understand numbers, patterns, shapes, data, and measurement, and apply this knowledge to everyday life. Pupils learn to solve problems, reason logically,

and make connections.

Through Mathematics and Numeracy, children develop important skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical reasoning. They also learn to apply mathematical understanding in practical ways, helping them become confident, capable, and logical thinkers.

Our Curriculum

In St. Thomas we believe the teaching and learning of Numeracy should be purposeful and rooted in real-life experiences.

We believe numeracy is far more than a stand-alone subject; it is a life skill that empowers children to understand and navigate the world around them. Our learners are immersed in a range of mathematical experiences that develop confidence, resilience and curiosity.

Through practical problem-solving and collaborative challenges, our children engage with mathematics in purposeful and meaningful ways. By thoughtfully embedding numeracy across the curriculum, we help children understand that mathematics is interconnected, relevant and influential in everyday life.

We are dedicated to ensuring maths is stimulating and accessible to every learner. Using practical resources, games, reasoning activities and open-ended enquiries, we strive to promote positive attitudes towards Maths.

Discussion, teamwork and reflection are integral to our approach, supporting pupils to articulate their reasoning and deepen their understanding.

Ultimately, our aim is for every child to see mathematics as a vital life skill, equipping them with the confidence, competence and enthusiasm they need for the future.
