Language, Literacy and Communication

At St Thomas, our Languages, Literacy and Communication curriculum helps children develop strong skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, as set out in the Curriculum for Wales. Pupils learn through a rich range of stories, information texts, poetry and different languages, helping them express themselves confidently and understand others.

Reading is at the heart of our approach. We use high‑quality literature to spark imagination, deepen understanding and nurture a lifelong love of reading for pleasure. We want every child to enjoy books and feel excited about reading.

Children also learn to communicate clearly, think critically and understand different viewpoints. These skills help them engage with the world around them and become thoughtful, articulate learners.

As part of our International Languages curriculum, our currently adopted language is Italian, and pupils enjoy weekly Italian lessons.

To support writing, the school has developed a writing genre map which guides the types of writing pupils experience across the year. You can view this document below.
