Admissions

St Thomas Community Primary School is a happy, friendly and inclusive school with over 400 pupils on roll and two classes per year group. We welcome applications from families across Swansea and beyond, providing a nurturing environment with children’s wellbeing at the forefront of everything we do. We believe that creating strong relationships with our learners helps them feel confident, supported, and ready to achieve their full potential.

Applications for all year groups must be made through Swansea Council.

Flying Start Admissions

Flying Start is a Welsh Government funded programme that offers high‑quality, part‑time childcare for 2–3‑year‑old children. In Swansea, all families with eligible aged children can now apply for up to 12.5 hours of funded childcare per week during school terms in a choice of settings, including school‑based nurseries where available. This support is designed to give young children a strong start in life, helping their development through play, language and social skills before they begin full‑time schooling.

To find out if your child is eligible and to apply, families can use the Swansea Flying Start eligibility checker and application tool on the Swansea Council website.

At St Thomas Community Primary School, we’re happy to talk to you about how Flying Start could support your family and can help answer any questions about early years provision.

Nursery Admissions

At St Thomas Community Primary School, we offer part‑time nursery places for children from the start of the term after their 3rd birthday. Nursery education in Swansea is non‑statutory, which means you can decide whether or not to take up a place, but you do need to apply in advance by contacting the school office to request an application form.

Please be aware that it may not always be possible to offer a nursery place at your first‑choice school, and if there are more applications than places available, your child’s name will be placed on a waiting list.

Attending our nursery does not automatically guarantee a place in Reception at St Thomas, so families will need to make a separate application for Reception through the Swansea Council admissions process when the time comes.

We warmly encourage prospective nursery families to visit the school and meet our friendly nursery team — please contact the school office to arrange a visit or to ask any questions about nursery provision and the application process.

Reception Admissions

If your child is due to start Reception class in September, you’ll need to make a formal application for a school place through Swansea Council’s online admissions system by the published deadline in the autumn/early winter before your child starts school. Applications usually open in the autumn and close in late November each year, and it’s important to apply on time so your child has the best chance of being offered a place.

When you apply, you can list more than one school in order of preference; this gives you more flexibility and increases the chance of securing a place at a school you’ve chosen. Even if your child attends nursery with us, you still need to submit a separate application for their Reception place.

Once places have been allocated, Swansea Council will notify you by letter or email about the outcome.

School Transfer Admissions

If your child needs to move to a different school partway through the school year, you can apply for a mid‑year transfer through Swansea Council’s admissions process. This is for families who have moved into the area, or who wish to transfer their child to a different school while the academic year is already under way. It’s a good idea to talk with your child’s current school and, if possible, to visit St Thomas Community Primary School before submitting an application so you can discuss options and how best to support your child’s learning.

Applications are usually processed within a few weeks, and if there is space in the appropriate year group at St Thomas, we can offer your child a place. If the year group is full, your child’s name will be placed on a waiting list for the rest of the academic year, and you may have the option to appeal the decision if needed.

We know that changing schools can be a big decision, so please get in touch with us if you’d like to discuss a transfer or arrange a visit — we’re happy to support you and your child through the process.
